How-to guide

How to record your screen in Chrome and share it as a link

Open Toolbox's Screen recorder and press Open recorder, set When you stop to Share link, then press Choose what to record and pick a tab, a window or your whole screen in Chrome's dialog. With Share link the video uploads while you record, so when you press Stop the link is already copied, ready to paste. You can add a camera bubble, your microphone and the tab's or system sound.

Share links need Premium ($20/month or $200/year) or Pro, which also remove the 5-minute limit. On the free plan, recordings of up to 5 minutes save to your computer as MP4 or WebM.

Step by step

  1. Add Toolbox to Chrome. Install Toolbox from the Chrome Web Store, pin it to the toolbar, and sign in with Google or your email. The free plan needs no card.
  2. Open the recorder. Click the Toolbox icon, open Screen recorder and press Open recorder. The recorder opens in its own tab; keep that tab open while you record.
  3. Choose what to record. Under What to record, keep Screen, window or tab (or pick Camera only). Turn on Show my camera in a corner for a camera bubble, Record microphone for your voice and Record tab / system audio for the page's sound. Pick the quality (720p to Source), 30 or 60 fps, and MP4 or WebM.
  4. Pick Share link. Under When you stop, pick Share link. Tick Save a copy to my computer too if you want the file as well.
  5. Start recording. Press Choose what to record (or R) and pick a tab, a window or your entire screen in Chrome's dialog; tick its option to share the tab or system audio if you want the sound. A 3-second countdown runs, then recording starts.
  6. Stop and paste the link. Press Stop (or S). The link is copied as you stop, and it plays as soon as the last part has uploaded.

The full version is on the web: Recordings in Toolbox, share links, your video library and link settings.

Good to know

  • In the recorder tab, Space pauses and resumes, M mutes your microphone, and S or Esc stops.
  • Manage every shared recording on the Toolbox website's Recordings page: add a password, set it to expire after 1, 7, 30 or 90 days or on a date, turn viewer downloads on or off, and allow comments and reactions.
  • Shared recordings get captions, a searchable transcript and an AI title made from what you said.
  • Trimming and cutting a recording needs Premium or Pro, and the link then plays the edited version.
  • If the upload fails, the recording is saved to Downloads/Toolbox instead, so nothing is lost.
  • On the free plan a recording stops by itself at 5 minutes, and everything up to then is there to save.
