How to speed up any video in Chrome past 2x
Open Toolbox's Video speed tool and type the speed you want, anywhere from 0.07× to 16×, or press D on the page to go faster and S to go slower. Toolbox uses one speed for every video and audio player on every site, embedded players included, keeps voices at their natural pitch, and puts your speed back when a site resets it.
Free, keyboard shortcuts included. Per-site speeds, volume boost and pitch shifting, picture controls and shortcuts that work from anywhere need Premium ($20/month or $200/year) or Pro.
Step by step
- Add Toolbox to Chrome. Install Toolbox from the Chrome Web Store, pin it to the toolbar, and sign in with Google or your email. The free plan needs no card.
- Open Video speed. Click the Toolbox icon and open Video speed.
- Set the speed. Pick a speed chip (0.75× to 3×), drag the slider (0.25× to 4×), or type any speed from 0.07 to 16 in the exact speed box.
- Or use the keys on the page. With a video or audio on the page: D is faster and S slower (0.1× a press), R resets to 1× (press again to go back), G jumps to your preferred speed (1.8×), and holding H plays at 3×. Z and X skip back and ahead 10 seconds.
- Change the keys if you like. In the Keys tab, click a shortcut and press the new key. Keys never fire while you type in a text box.
The full version is on the web: Video speed in Toolbox, site rules, shortcuts and time saved.
Good to know
- The speed applies to every site, and to each video or audio as soon as it starts.
- Keep voices at their natural pitch is on by default, so fast speech stays clear.
- If a site resets the speed, Toolbox puts yours back (Put my speed back when a site resets it). A speed you pick in a site's own menu becomes your new speed.
- A player that refuses a speed, such as some live streams, keeps its own.
- It works on web pages; Chrome's own pages can't be changed by extensions.
- With Premium you can keep a different speed for each site, make quiet videos up to 6× louder, and shift the pitch without changing the speed.
Questions
Something else? Write to us.
What's the fastest and slowest speed?
16× and 0.07×, the range Chrome itself can play. The slider covers 0.25× to 4×; type any speed in the box next to it for the rest.
Does it work on embedded videos and podcasts?
Yes. Toolbox finds every video and audio element on the page, including players embedded from other sites and audio that plays without showing a player.
Can I set a different speed for one site?
With Premium or Pro, yes: Keep a separate speed on a site, or set it under Sites. On the free plan one speed covers every site, and you can turn Toolbox off on a site.
Will the shortcuts clash with the site's own?
The defaults are letters like S, D and R rather than < and >, which many players use for their own speed, and you can change or clear any of them in the Keys tab.
Does it work on Mac, Windows and Chromebooks?
Toolbox runs in Google Chrome 116 or later on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS. It isn't available for phones, where Chrome doesn't support extensions.
