How to screenshot a whole chat or feed that scrolls inside the page

Use Scrolling panel in Toolbox's Screenshots tool: click it, then click the chat, feed or sidebar on the page. Toolbox scrolls just that panel from top to bottom, crops each shot to it and stitches them into one tall image, without the rest of the page around it.

Scrolling-panel capture needs Premium ($20/month or $200/year) or Pro. Screenshots of the visible area or a selected area are free.

Step by step

  1. Add Toolbox to Chrome. Install Toolbox from the Chrome Web Store, pin it to the toolbar, and sign in with Google or your email. The free plan needs no card.
  2. Open the chat or feed. Open the page with the conversation, feed or sidebar, in a normal tab.
  3. Choose Scrolling panel. Click the Toolbox icon, open Screenshots and click Scrolling panel (“A chat, feed or sidebar”).
  4. Click the panel. Move the pointer over the page: the part that scrolls gets a dashed outline and a label such as “div.chat · scrollable”. Click it. Clicking a message inside a chat picks the chat around it, and Esc cancels.
  5. Let it capture. Toolbox scrolls the panel itself a strip at a time, crops every shot to the panel and stitches them. The side panel shows the progress, and Cancel capture stops it.
  6. Edit or save it. By default the screenshot opens in the Toolbox editor, where you can crop it, add arrows, text and numbered steps, blur anything private and download it as PNG, JPG or WebP. To save captures straight to your Downloads folder instead, set After capturing to Save to Downloads in the Screenshots tool.

The full version is on the web: Screenshots in Toolbox, mark up and share your captures.

Good to know

  • It captures the messages or posts the panel has loaded. If a chat loads older messages only as you scroll up, scroll up until the ones you want are showing before you start.
  • The page's own fixed bars outside the panel are hidden while it captures, so they don't cover it.
  • If clicking picks nothing, the page scrolls as a whole rather than in a panel: use Full page instead.
  • For panels that load slowly, raise Wait between shots, for slow pages under Options → Full page.
  • A capture taller than 32,000 pixels is saved as several images, and a capture stops after 150 screens. Chrome's own pages (chrome:// and the Chrome Web Store) can't be captured; for local files, turn on Allow access to file URLs for Toolbox in chrome://extensions.
  • Scrolling panel has no keyboard shortcut; Full page is Alt+Shift+P.

Questions

Does it work with web chat apps and social feeds?

It works with chats, feeds and sidebars on web pages that scroll inside their own box, which is how most web chat apps and feeds are built. It can't capture desktop apps, only pages open in Chrome.

Is it free?

No. Scrolling-panel and full-page captures are part of Premium and Pro. On the free plan, Visible area (Alt+Shift+C) captures what's on screen, including part of a chat.

How is it different from a full-page screenshot?

Full page scrolls the whole page. Scrolling panel scrolls only the box you click, such as a chat inside a page that itself doesn't scroll, and leaves out everything around it.

Where are my screenshots saved?

With Edit in Toolbox (the default), each capture opens in the Toolbox editor on the website. On a paid plan it's also kept in your Toolbox cloud, so you can open it from any computer; on the free plan it stays in your browser. With Save to Downloads, it goes to a Toolbox folder in your Downloads and stays on your computer.

Does it work on Mac, Windows and Chromebooks?

Toolbox runs in Google Chrome 116 or later on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS. It isn't available for phones, where Chrome doesn't support extensions.
